More than 20 journalists from Australia and seven countries in the southwest Pacific region attended a three-day APJC Innovation Program workshop on understanding and reporting change in Europe and connections with countries in Australia's region.
The program of presentations, discussions and computer exercises was run in collaboration with the European Commission delegation to Australia and New Zealand, which was the major funder, the European Journalism Centre in Maastricht and the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at the University of Melbourne. Other funding was provided by the British High Commission and the German and Netherlands embassies.
Participating journalists came from Papua New Guinea and Fiji (three from each), Samoa, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and East Timor (one from each) and Australia (10).
Speakers included the EU ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, Mr Piergiorgio Mazzocchi, and the Netherlands ambassador, Mr Hans Sondaal, academics and senior Australian journalists with experience in covering Europe.
Seminar topics included: understanding the EU; the enlargement of the EU and national identity; EU trade and aid policies; EU foreign policy, security and defence issues; EU relations with Australia and the southwest Pacific; reporting Europe at a distance, and reporting Europe on the ground.
